Slip Sliding Away
Janet wrote an earlier version of this short story after taking a fiction writing course at Queens University at Charlotte. The editor of a collection of short stories, Tales for a Long Winter’s Night, selected “Slip Sliding Away” as the lead story for the book.
Janet has honed her writing skills since then and revised the story. It is set during a late spring blizzard in 1875 in the southern Appalachian Mountains in a fictional Scots-Irish settlement. Sarah Johnson takes the blizzard and her husband’s injury and illness to finally use the powdery contents of an envelope she has hidden in her cupboard.
But what are Sarah’s intentions? Does she mean to ease her husband’s suffering? Or does she intend to put an end to him? You’ll have to read the story to find out!
